SEEKING:

ELLA (Female presenting, 20s-30s, Soprano, Any Ethnicity) Kind hearted with an infectious generosity of spirit. A big hearted dreamer who wants to make the world a better place. Passionate, determined, and tenacious. Traditional musical theatre soprano.

TOPHER (Male presenting, 20s – early 30s, Baritone, Any Ethnicity) The prince of the kingdom. Tries to be heroic, but deeply naïve and not always quick on the draw. In search of his purpose. His kindhearted nature spills into an endearing goofiness at times. Traditional musical theatre baritone to G.

MADAME (Female presenting, 40s – 50s, Mezzo-Soprano, Any Ethnicity) Ella’s selfish stepmother. A vain and tyrannical climber. Deeply concerned with status and image and entirely dismissive of her stepdaughter. Comic timing is essential. Traditional musical theatre character voice.

GABRIELLE (Female presenting, 20s – 30s, Mezzo-Soprano, Any Ethnicity) Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Begins aligned with her materialistic mother, but her kindness and thoughtful nature emerges as her eyes are opened to the world by Ella and her love interest John-Michel. Perhaps a bit quirky and cut from a different mold than the social climbers around her. Comic timing is essential. Strong and expressive traditional musical theatre voice.

CHARLOTTE (Female presenting, Late 20s – 30s, Mezzo-Soprano, Any Ethnicity) Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Deeply self-involved, attention seeker. Loud, brash and delights in her arrogance. Lacks self-awareness and often the last one in on the joke. Excellent comic timing required. Traditional musical theatre character belt to F.

THE ONE-ACT PLAY THAT GOES WRONG

By Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer & Henry Shields

You’re invited to the opening night of the Cornley University Drama Society’s newest production, The Murder at Haversham Manor, where things are quickly going from bad to utterly disastrous. This 1920s whodunit has everything you never wanted in a show—an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines). Nevertheless, the accident-prone thespians battle against all odds to make it to their final curtain call. Part Monty Python, part Sherlock Holmes, The One-Act Play That Goes Wrong is a global phenomenon that’s guaranteed to have you aching with laughter.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a physically demanding show. Most roles will require varying amounts of crawling, climbing, lifting, running, and/or falling. We will be working with a professional fight coach to assure that this will all be done safely. RP accents are required for all characters except Annie and Trevor. Age ranges for characters are flexible (18+) and will depend upon groupings and pairings found through callbacks. Most characters fall between 18-55.

Rehearsals are tentatively scheduled to start December 9, 2024 (with a 2 week break between December 23 - January 3) with performances January 31 - February 9, 2025 (with a possible extension to February 16, 2025).

SEEKING:

Chris: Any gender. The director of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society and plays Inspector Carter in the murder mystery. It’s extremely important to him that this show goes well. He rarely lashes out in anger and instead lets it coil tighter and tighter inside of him.

Robert: Male presenting. Plays the role of Thomas in the play-within-a-play. Thinks he is the best actor and everyone can learn from his example. There’s nothing he can’t act his way out of.

Sandra: Female presenting. Plays the role of  Florence in the play-within-a-play. She relishes her role as the society’s leading lady and will not let anything ruin her turn in the spotlight. She is very confident.

Max: Male presenting. Plays the role of Cecil in the play-within-a-play. Never been onstage before. Learned his lines and does exactly what he’s told to do. Zero ‘connection’ with other characters while onstage, but when he gets a laugh he breaks the fourth wall and engages as himself.

Dennis or Denise: Any gender. Plays the role of Perkins in the play-within-a-play. Utterly bewildered, confused, and terrified. While usually a few steps behind the rest of the cast, they always try their best.

Johnathan: Male presenting. Plays the role of Charles Haversham (deceased) in the play-within-a-play. While pretending to be dead, he keeps jumping the gun with the ‘twist’ ending.

Annie: Female presenting. The stage manager for the murder mystery. She is always willing to do whatever it takes to have a successful performance.

Trevor: Male presenting. The company's lighting and sound operator. He’s a bit messy and gets lost in the disorganization.

Book by Craig Lucas

Music and Lyrics by Adam Guettel

Travel with American tourists Margaret Johnson and her daughter Clara as they take in the wonders of Florence, Italy, in the summer of 1953. When a fateful gust of wind whisks Clara’s hat into the hands of Fabrizio, it’s amore at first sight. Heralded as a work of consummate beauty when it opened on Broadway, The Light in the Piazza won six Tony Awards, including Best Original Score for Adam Guettel (grandson of legendary composer Richard Rodgers). HOME, I’M DARLING

By Laura Wade

Everything is perfect - the house is tidy, the table is set, and Judy’s dress is pressed for when she greets Johnny at the door, martini in hand. It is the 1950s, and life is ordered just right. Or is it? As the fantasy fades, the edges of this perfect life start to unravel, and we discover that things are not quite what they seem. In Home, I’m Darling (winner of the 2019 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy), playwright Laura Wade explores the complications of marriage, cake, and the dangers of nostalgia.

 Rehearsals start April 14, 2025 with performances May 23-June 1, 2025.

SEEKING:

Judy: (Female Presenting - Early 40s) Someone with deep reverence and longing to return to a way of life that she thinks existed in the 1950s. She and her husband turned their house into a mid-century lookalike and have adopted a nostalgic 50s lifestyle. Judy is a complex character whose layers peel away throughout the course of the play. She wants to be the perfect housewife...or does she?

Johnny: (Male Presenting - Early 40s) Judy’s husband, who willingly dives into the 50s lifestyle change experiment. On the surface, he's content with the reality he is in, but underneath he starts to quietly question this contentment.

Fran: (Female Presenting - Mid 30s/early 40s) Judy’s friend. She and her husband also love the 50s style, but she is only willing to adapt certain elements. Fran likes hanging out with Judy and Johnny, but she is curious about Judy’s motives for going so far with the lifestyle commitment.

Marcus: (Male Presenting - 40s) Fran’s older husband. He likes the idea of the 50s style and along with his wife is happy to adapt elements of it. He represents more traditional, men-centric attitudes and secretly yearns for the ideal housewife.

Sylvia: (Female Presenting - 60s) Judy’s mother. She doesn’t understand Judy’s obsession with 50s. Sylvia is an activist whose views about the past are quite different from Judy's. She loves her daughter, but fails to comprehend her choices.

Alex: (Female Presenting - 30s) Alex is Johnny’s new boss. She is fascinated and bewildered by the couple’s way of life. She brings in a more critical attitude towards nostalgia. She is career driven and focused on work.

WAITRESS

Book by Jessie Nelson

Music and Lyrics by Sara Bareilles

Featuring original music and lyrics by Grammy Award winner Sara Bareilles ("Brave," "Love Song"), Waitress has been praised by audiences and critics alike. Jenna, a waitress and expert pie-maker, dreams of a way out of her small town and rocky marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county offers her a chance at a fresh start, but first, Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life. This “little slice of heaven” (Entertainment Weekly) celebrates friendship, motherhood, and the magic of a well-made pie.

Rehearsals start June 2, 2025 with performances July 11-27, 2025.

SEEKING:

JENNA: (Female Presenting - Late 20s-30s) Jenna is stuck in her life as an unhappily married waitress in a small town. Finds some happiness and expression through her meticulous baking of pies and her friendships with her coworkers, Dawn and Becky. Lives her life paycheck-to-paycheck, day by day, and wants nothing more than to get away and start fresh, unbeknownst to her destructive husband, Earl. Has a fantastic pop/rock voice with great range. Mezzo-soprano F#3 - F5.

DAWN: (Female Presenting - Late 20s-early 30s) Dawn is the youngest of the waitresses and the newest to the diner. Endearing and genuine. Thick glasses, hair parted 14 centimeters to the left— eccentric is the nice way to say she’s slightly unusual, and not so slightly OCD. She sets the tables, painstakingly ensuring each salt and pepper-shaker is equidistant from the napkin holder. Has an excellent pop/rock/folk voice. Mezzo-soprano G3 - Eb5.

BECKY:  (Female Presenting - 40s-early 50s) The oldest of the three waitresses. Becky has been at the diner the longest. Irreverent, irascible, been there - done that - and made it back. Becky has a wicked sense of humor with excellent comedic timing. Has a soulful pop voice with an excellent pop belt. Mezzo-soprano Eb3 - Eb5.

DR. POMATTER: (Male Presenting - 30s-early 40s) Handsome, endearing, and neurotic. Has a warm, and somewhat clumsy, manner. Jenna’s gynecologist. He has a quirky sense of humor and a big heart and, despite the fact that he’s having an affair with Jenna, he is a good person. Has impeccable comedic timing and moves well. Has a very strong pop/rock tenor that can navigate the musical style of Sara Bareilles with ease. Tenor C3 - Bb4.

CAL: (Male Presenting - 40s) A chef at the diner. A “Salt of the Earth” guy’s guy surrounded by gals. Brash, impatient, unsentimental, but somehow charming. Should have a strong pop/rock voice with great comedic chops. Has a strong contemporary baritone singing voice in the style of Sara Bareilles and has excellent comedic timing. Could possibly cover the role of Joe. B2 - G4.

OGIE: (Male Presenting - 30s) Eccentric, genuine and lovable. Absolutely smitten with Dawn (in a hilarious yet endearing way) after she goes on a 5-minute date with him. Quirky, incredibly persistent, yet always kind. Has excellent comedic timing. Has an excellent pop/rock tenor/baritenor sound. Tenor C3 - Bb4. Ogie’s solo is more “character operatic” in style than high in pitch. Physical comedy skills are a plus. If interested in this role, the director would like you to add a 20 second presentation of those skills, reflecting awkwardness on meeting someone you have a severe crush on.

EARL:  (Male Presenting - 30s-early 40s) Jenna’s husband. Peaked in high school, handsome in a gruff way, but that face is clouded with broken dreams, drowned with cheap beer. Just enough narcissism mixed with stupidity, to be a potent Molotov cocktail that can explode into unexpected anger one second and then turn into a sobbing mess the next. Guitar playing a plus. Eb3 - G4.

JOE: (Male Presenting - 60s) The owner of the diner where Jenna, Dawn, Becky, and Cal work. A curmudgeonly man who has a soft spot for Jenna (and her pie). Gruff exterior but a warmth and kindness within. Joe is a sarcastic and no nonsense guy with a keen ability to read people. Very funny. Baritenor B2 - G#4.

ENSEMBLE: (20s-40s) Must have excellent pop/rock voices in the style of Sara Bareilles. Strong actors to play a range of characters comprising the community in which the story takes place. Must be strong movers with excellent comedic timing. Understudy principal roles.

Every Brilliant Thing

By Duncan Macmillan, with Jonny Donahoe

“Ice cream.” “Water fights.” “Laughing so hard you shoot milk out your nose.” A boy’s handwritten list to cheer up his despondent mom becomes a surprisingly funny and poignant ode to humanity. Every Brilliant Thing invites audiences on a transcendent and tender coming-of-age journey that reminds us to pay attention to life’s smallest joys—and to each other. This hilarious and heart-wrenching play “highlights the irrepressible resilience of the human spirit and the capacity to find delight in the everyday.” (Time Out London)
