For our musical production of La Cage Aux Folles, the Duluth Playhouse is proud to welcome visiting guest artist, Tod Petersen, to our stage for the first time!
Tod is an actor, director, writer and teacher based in the Twin Cities, and has performed in a plethora of venues across the metro area. He was a regular at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres for some time (think, 20ish years!). He directed and acted with Interact Center for the Arts. And for eight years, he provided a holiday highlight for Twin Cities audiences with Theater Latte’ Da’s “A Christmas Carole Petersen,” in which he brought his charm and love to a lampoon of his family’s traditions.*
He has also performed at The History Theatre, Children’s Theatre Company (CTC), Artistry at Bloomington Civic. the Ordway Center, the Illusion Theater, the Minnesota Festival Theater, and others. He has also performed in various theatres across the grand city of Chicago.
“I love being in a play, going to the theater, hanging out in the dressing room, being with the guys, putting on my costume,” he said.
Studying at Mankato State University, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Theater, Speech and Special Education. He has also trained at The Training Center in Chicago under Dan Lamorte, and at Brave New Workshop with Jenni Lilledahl.
“I never had the loftiest goals; I just like the work, mucking around with all my friends on stage. Being an actor is so much fun. It’s just so much fun,” he adds.
It hasn’t been a full stage career all the time for Tod and his husband, Ryan Lee. After closing Theater Latte’ Da’s 2014 production of Our Town, Petersen and Lee spent time housesitting in northern Wisconsin, doing odd jobs in Lanesboro, Minnesota, teaching music to children in the mountains of Honduras, and visiting Thailand for Interact Center for the Arts over the span of a few years.*
After returning from his hiatus, Petersen quickly jumped back into stage work in the Twin Cities and performed in Gypsy at Theater Latte’ Da/Hennepin Theatre Trust, The Sound of Music at the Ordway, The Diary of a Wimpy Kid at CTC, The Drowsy Chaperone at Artistry, and a few more, including coming up to Duluth, Minn., for La Cage Aux Folles.
