Superior Street Construction Updates

UPDATE: 5/16/2019

Here is the latest in construction news:

  • Pedestrian detour route maps are included in large kiosks at each intersection, and sidewalk access continues to remain open during all of the construction!
  • Crews have been working to remove a significant amount of ledge rock to prepare for installing the permanent new water main between 2nd Avenue East and Lake Avenue.
  • Removal of the 100-year steam heating system will commence. The removal of the existing District Steam Heating System, within the limits of this year’s project, involves the mitigation and removal of the existing asbestos-containing steam pipes that have been serving Downtown Duluth for over 100 years. The removal of these pipes will be performed by a licensed asbestos abatement contractors and environmental monitoring will be performed to ensure worker and public safety.

Looking for the best places to park when coming to see a show? Hopefully, this map guides you to where you need to go. The best ramps for parking when visiting us at the NorShor Theatre are:

  • The Medical District Ramp (302 E. First Street). Located behind the Sheraton Hotel, this ramp is currently free for the 1st hour and free after 5:00pm. This ramp is also connected to the Greysolon Plaza and the NorShor Theatre via the skywalk, and new directional signage will help guide patrons and visitors to both locations.
  • The HART District Ramp (125 E. Superior Street). There is access to this ramp via 1st Street on the left-hand side of the street, right after the Pawn Duluth storefront (look for blue Public Parking signage!). This ramp also has free parking for the first hour but will charge after that. This ramp is also NOT connected to the NorShor Theatre via the skywalk. Patrons will have to walk to the theatre from this ramp.
  • The Tech Village Ramp (10 E. First Street). Located behind Pizza Luce and just before Lake Avenue, this ramp will also be free for the first hour of parking but will charge after that first hour.

We have a little video update for you! Please note, it’s not indicated, but access to the NorShor Theatre is available from all sidewalks, not just this one particular pathway shown within the video.

This week with the construction project:

  • Crews finished removing bricks and pavement from East of Lake Avenue to West of 3rd Avenue East.
  • The wall between 1st Avenue East and 2nd Avenue East was removed to prepare for a new retaining wall.

We don’t just have construction happening outside our front doors, either. We’re also constructing new office spaces inside the NorShor. Here’s a sneak peek of the chaos:

UPDATE: 4/3/2019

The City of Duluth is excited to kick off the next season of transformation in downtown Duluth with a series of upcoming events. Superior Street will undergo the second of three phases of construction to install improved utilities, energy efficient closed loop hot water heat system, and streetscape amenities that cater to more pedestrian activity and enjoyment.

The second phase extends from east of Lake Avenue to west of 4th Avenue E., and this phase does include and affect Duluth Playhouse productions performing at the NorShor Theatre this April-October 2019.

The following events are important upcoming dates for the project:

  • Monday, April 8 – Pending weather conditions, Superior Street from the east side of Lake Ave to the west side of 3rd Ave E will be closed beginning on Monday, April 8.
    • This may or may not affect our patrons attending the final weekend of Sweeney Todd (April 11-14).
  • Monday, April 8 at 1:00pm – Season 2 public kickoff event in front of the Tech Village between Lake Avenue and 1st Avenue E. The public is invited to attend the event that will include speeches from Mayor Emily Larson, Kristi Stokes with the Greater Downtown Council, Northland Constructors, and several other key partners of the project.

The red color illustrates the area of downtown Duluth affected by Phase 2 of the Superior Street project.

What does this mean for our patrons coming to see a show between now and October?

SIDEWALK ACCESS:

  • Sidewalk access will still be available, but if you typically do front door drop-off before and/or pick-up after performances, this will not be an option during the construction phase. It may remain an option through the run of Sweeney Todd, but for upcoming events after Sweeney Todd and through October, patrons will need to make alternate drop-off or pick-up arrangements.

PARKING:

WHEELCHAIR ASSISTANCE:

  • Right inside the doors of the Medical Parking Ramp (marked with the NorShor logo), we have a waiting area and an usher ready to help should you require assistance safely navigating the skywalk and your way into the NorShor.
  • New signage is being posted throughout the parking ramps, as well as street kiosks to assist with directions and wayfinding.

  • Our Box Office hours will currently remain the same (Monday-Friday, noon-6:00pm), and you may always contact us by phone (218.733.7555) or email (boxoffice@norshortheatre.com) for assistance.
