The AAD will work closely with the Executive Producing Artistic Director (EPAD) to maintain the high standards of artistic excellence, assist with season planning, and contribute to the development of the Playhouse’s growing presence in the community. The Associate Artistic Director will help manage all aspects of artistic programming, including productions, educational initiatives, and special events, while ensuring that all activities align with the mission, vision, and values of Duluth Playhouse.

Key Responsibilities:
Artistic Leadership & Collaboration:
- Collaborate with the Executive Producing Artistic Director to maintain and evolve the artistic vision for Duluth Playhouse’s Main Stage, Underground, and Youth Theatre productions.
- Act as the Executive Producing Artistic Director’s primary artistic liaison, representing the Playhouse’s artistic interests and initiatives with community members, patrons, and sponsors.
- Assist Executive Producing Artistic Director as needed to provide support and guidance to the artistic team, including guest directors, actors, designers, and other collaborators, ensuring that all production aspects are in line with the Playhouse’s artistic standards.
- Attend production and design meetings when necessary for Main Stage, Underground and Youth Theatre productions.
- Support and mentor emerging artists and theatre professionals, ensuring a culture of growth, mentorship, and inclusivity within the artistic team.
Season Planning & Production Oversight:
- Work with the Executive Producing Artistic Director to plan upcoming seasons, ensuring diversity, community relevance, and artistic excellence.
- Oversee artistic and production processes for selected shows, ensuring that artistic goals are met within the allocated budget and timeline.
Education & Community Engagement:
- Collaborate with the Director of Education to support and enhance Duluth Playhouse’s educational programming, including the Youth Theatre season and School of Performing Arts offerings.
- Assist in developing community engagement strategies that promote inclusivity and bring new and diverse audiences to Duluth Playhouse productions.
- Serve as a liaison for community organizations, schools, and arts groups, fostering relationships that encourage artistic collaboration and outreach.
- Attend and support community and educational events, workshops, and performances to further Duluth Playhouse's connection to the community.
Strategic Planning & Budgeting:
- Support the Executive Producing Artistic Director and Production Manager in the development of annual artistic budgets for productions, programs, and events.
- Ensure that all artistic projects are managed within budget parameters, working closely with the Production Manager and Technical Director to assess and manage expenses.
- Contribute to long-range planning for the growth and sustainability of Duluth Playhouse’s artistic initiatives.
- Assist the Director of Development with securing grants and sponsorships to fund artistic and educational programming.
Representation & Public Relations:
- Represent Duluth Playhouse at public events, speaking engagements, and festivals, articulating the artistic vision of the organization when necessary.
- Collaborate with the Marketing Director to ensure that the Playhouse’s productions, education programs, and special events are properly represented in marketing materials, including brochures, social media, and advertisements.
- Actively participate in fundraising and sponsorship activities, helping to cultivate relationships with potential donors and partners.
- Help develop and implement strategies for promoting the Playhouse’s artistic activities, ensuring that the Playhouse’s mission and artistic “voice” are consistently communicated.
Leadership & Staff Management:
- Support the work of the Production Manager, Technical Director, and any additional artistic or technical staff members.
- Contribute to the creation of organizational policies and procedures as it relates to artistic programming and production practices.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Perform any other duties as required by the Executive Producing Artistic Director.
- Serve as a key member of the Playhouse’s leadership team, attending regular staff meetings.
- Promote a culture of creativity, professionalism, and inclusion throughout the Playhouse.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Theater, Fine Arts, or a related field;
- At least 5 years of experience in theatre production, with a strong focus on artistic direction, stage management, and/or production.
- Demonstrated leadership ability in a creative, collaborative, and fast-paced environment.
- A strong understanding of theatre production processes, from pre-production to performance.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Experience in fostering an inclusive environment for both artists and audiences.
- Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
- A passion for community engagement and arts education.
- Ability to work effectively in a non-profit, mission-driven environment.
- A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the arts.
Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience in artistic leadership within a theatre or performing arts organization.
- Experience with youth theatre or educational programming.
- Familiarity with grant writing and securing funding for artistic projects.
- Knowledge of marketing and promotional strategies within the arts.
